Depression is awful and debilitating, as anyone who’s suffered through it knows. Millions have suffered through it. But there are also positive aspects to a melancholy temperament. There is truth in the stereotype of the mad genius, and perhaps the genius wouldn’t be so brilliant if he wasn’t mad. What else but melancholy could be the muse for artists from Van Gogh to Schumann to Virginia Woolf? Nanny knows best

The rise of the nanny state on college campuses has been going on for years. First it was smoking, banned in private dorm rooms to preserve young lungs and to prevent fires. College administrators have also taken on alcohol with a vengeance, increasing penalties for the vice, and cracking down on events where drinking is likely to occur. “Here I am, typing aimlessly, hoping to exorcise my demons,” a despondent 19-year-old Elizabeth Shin wrote before setting herself on fire in her MIT dorm room in April of 2000. Firemen at the scene found her engulfed in flames. She died a few days later from her injuries.
